Staff Rally to Hold the Line on Nursing Home Funding

James R Thompson Center
Outdoor Plaza - 100 W Randolph, Chicago
Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at 10:00 a.m.

Local 743 members, staff and hundreds of nursing home workers and supporters rallied at the Thompson Center in Chicago Tuesday to urge the State of Illinois to "Hold the Line" on Medicaid funding for nursing homes. Proposed cuts in the 2016 fiscal budget would be devastating.

The state notified nursing homes and supportive living communities in April that their share of the fiscal year 2015 budget cuts would dramatically increase, jumping from $25.5 million to more than $55 million.

The cut will be taken from Medicaid rates in May and June, although nursing homes and supportive living communities are paid upwards of nine months late, so any actual cash savings would not be realized until well into fiscal year 2016, which begins July 1.

Some of the GOALS of the rally included:
• Quality care, food and home-llke surroundings
• Staff must have fair wages and a good work environment
• Families must depend on proper care of their loved ones
