More than 20 members and representatives of Teamsters Local 743 rallied behind President Barack Obama for a series of volunteer labor walks in Milwaukee on Saturday, Oct. 27.
With just days remaining before the 2012 General Election—and an all but guaranteed victory for Illinois native Obama in his home state—Teamsters across the country are prepared to win Wisconsin for the Democratic incumbent. Members of the Local 743 Women’s Committee and several local representatives, including President Donnie Von Moore and Secretary-Treasurer Debra Simmons-Peterson, helped coordinate the weekend house walks to distribute literature and speak with voters up north.
“It’s vitally important for workers and union members to vote in this election, regardless of what state you live in,” said Von Moore, who assisted members with the help of numerous Local 743 business agents. “The Teamsters Union formally endorsed President Obama for re-election in May and we’ve been working hard ever since to effectively communicate his commitment to labor unions and American workers.”
Simmons-Peterson, who also serves as President of the Teamsters Joint Council 25 Women’s Committee, echoed Von Moore’s sentiments.
“These get-out-the-vote campaigns would not be successful without the dedication and sacrifice of Local 743 members,” the Secretary-Treasurer said. “The local cannot thank members enough for volunteering their time, on weekends no less, to help move this country in a better direction.”
A Marquette University Law School poll released on Oct. 31 showed Obama maintaining an eight-point lead with his re-election campaign in Wisconsin. On Oct. 27, Local 743 volunteers spent more than six hours walking door-to-door in neighborhoods across Milwaukee to encourage Wisconsin residents to vote on Nov. 6. With the help of the Teamsters International and the AFL-CIO, union members have knocked on more than 10,000 doors throughout the Badger State during the election cycle.
