Refractory Builders Ratify 3-Year Contract
Updated On: Jun 07, 2013

With refined craftsmanship at work and unparalleled support at the bargaining table, refractory builders represented by Teamsters Local 743 recently ratified a new three-year contract.

Fourteen workers with Magneco/Metrel unanimously approved their latest agreement, securing annual wage increases in the process. Working in a high-pressure manufacturing plant, the Teamsters produce refractory materials from natural elements that resist heat. The materials are most often used to create furnaces, kilns, reactors and incinerators for iron-makers, steel companies and glass manufacturers.

“The work these Teamsters perform is heavy-duty,” said Donnie Von Moore, President of Local 743. “Many people still think of Teamsters as truck drivers, but truth be told we have so many members in this union who produce some of the most unique and intricate products you’ve ever seen.”

Von Moore added, “The workers’ new contract is also an achievement for Magneco/Metrel, an enduring company that recognizes and appreciates the skills its workforce brings into the shop every single day.”

As part of the new agreement, Magneco/Metrel will continue to make annual contributions to a company-sponsored pension fund for all workers. Health and welfare benefits are also provided in full for employees, at no additional cost to Teamster members.

Magneco/Metrel is headquartered in Addision in Chicago’s western suburbs.

Teamsters Local 743 represents more than 11,000 hardworking men and women in health care, warehouse, clerical, mail-order and professional industries throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.
